Un Chehel Sotoun (en persan : چهل ستون, « … Un Chehel Sotoun (en persan : چهل ستون, « quarante colonnes » ) est un palais de type iranien qui, comme son nom l'indique, possède un grand nombre de colonnes. Celles-ci ne sont cependant pas forcément quarante, ce nombre étant utilisé en persan pour signifier l'abondance. Ainsi, à Qazvin, le chehel sotoun édifié pour le chah Tahmasp en a-t-il vingt, qui se reflètent dans un grand bassin. On connaît des chehel sotoun en Iran, bien évidemment, en particulier à la période safavide : – un à édifié pour le chah Tahmasp vers 1556 ;– un à Ispahan pour le chah Abbas II, en 1647. Il en existe également en Inde moghole et un en Afghanistan, le de Kaboul édifié pour le prince Habib Allah en 1891.édifié pour le prince Habib Allah en 1891.
