Der Bestandteil Herdecke geht zurück auf das anthroposophisch ausgerichtete Gemeinschaftskrankenhaus in der Wittener Nachbarstadt Herdecke. Dort entstanden die ersten Ideen zur Gründung und dort fand auch in den ersten Jahren der Unterricht statt. Heute zählt es zu den Gesellschaftern der Universität. Seit 2009 ist mit 50,3 % die anthroposophische Software AG Stiftung Hauptgesellschafterin. Die Universität verfolgt heute neben dem anthroposophischen auch das humanistisch-humboldtsche Bildungsideal und bietet anthroposophische Begleitstudien für die Bereiche Medizin und Psychologie an.
