La competencia consta de siete exámenes de opción múltiple, dos presentaciones, y un ensayo. El Decatlón Académico fue credo por Robert Peterson en 1968 para las escuelas locales del Condado de Orange, en California; expandiéndose a nivel nacional en 1981. En aquel año participaron 17 estados, más el Distrito de Columbia; poco a poco el número de estados participantes se ha ido incrementando hasta incluir a casi todo el país y algunas instituciones extranjeras.
