Seit 1998 lehrt er an der Technischen Universität Berlin als Professor für Philosophie. In seiner Habilitationsschrift beschäftigte er sich mit Formen der Kritik an der klassischen Geschichtsphilosophie, die mit der Absicht entwickelt wurden, eine bestimmte Sozialwissenschaft (die Geschichtswissenschaft bzw. die Soziologie) zu begründen. In seinem Denken ist Gil stets um die Rekonstruktion der Entstehungs- und Geltungsbedingungen von Gedanken und Argumentationen bemüht.
