Elle est menée par Elefthérios Venizélos et tire son nom du village natal de la mère de Venizélos, Thérissos, qui est le siège de cette révolte. La révolte de Thérissos naît du conflit entre Elefthérios Venizélos et le prince Georges de Grèce à propos de l'avenir de l'île, en particulier sur la question de l'union de la Crète à la Grèce.
