It is native to the Amazon basin, and was discovered in 1911 by botanical explorer Dr. Ernst H.G. Ule. S. excelsa is a monocarp producing an immense thyrse 10 ft (3.0 m) high and about 12 ft (3.7 m) wide; the second largest inflorescence of any dicot (after Harmsiopanax ingens).
