It has won more than 25 awards. Skyrail Rainforest Cableway journeys through the Wet Tropics Rainforest, home to the world's oldest tropical rainforest, older than the Amazon Rainforest. It was the longest gondola cableway in the world when it was completed in 1995. The cableway, which journeys over the between Smithfield and Kuranda, includes six-person gondola cabins that glide metres above the treetops. A one-way trip takes about 1.5 hours, and a return trip is about 2.5 hours. Two rainforest stations, Red Peak (16°50′57″S 145°40′10″E / 16.8493°S 145.6695°E) and Barron Falls (16°50′01″S 145°38′44″E / 16.8335°S 145.6455°E), allow exploration of the forest floor on boardwalks and education of the World Heritage area. Complimentary ranger guided tours are available at Red Peak. An interpretative display the 'Rainforest Discovery Zone' is located at Red Peak. A Rainforest Interpretation Centre, developed in conjunction with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), is located at the Barron Falls. The Edge Lookout, open to the public since March 2019, is located at Barron Falls. The lookout reaches out 160 metres (520 ft) above Barron Gorge floor, with views across the Gorge and Barron Falls. The lookout also incorporates a glass floor section. It was the only Australian finalist in the 2014 International Tourism for Tomorrow Award. In 2012, it was the first tourism attraction in the world to receive Platinum EarthCheck Accreditation. It won the 2000 British Airways Tourism for Tomorrow International Environment Award, the 1996 EIBTM European Greening of Business Tourism Most Environmentally Conscious Visitor Attraction Award and the 2008 and 2009 Qantas National Award for Excellence in Sustainable Tourism. Ausgangspunkt der Gondelbahn ist der im Vorort gelegene Smithfield Terminal, 14 Kilometer nördlich von Cairns. Die Sechs-Personen-Gondeln benötigen für die Fahrt über zwei Zwischenstationen rund anderthalb Stunden. An beiden Stationen besteht die Möglichkeit auszusteigen und auf ausgebauten Wegen durch den Regenwald zu wandern. Die Seilbahn endet in der Regenwaldstadt Kuranda. Die Skyrail gehört zu den wichtigsten touristischen Attraktionen von Nord-Queensland. Die Gondelbahn geht auf ein Konzept aus dem Jahre 1987 zurück. 1994 wurde mit dem Bau der Einseil-Umlaufbahn begonnen, die von POMA geliefert und am 31. August 1995 eröffnet wurde. Der Smithfield Terminal liegt nur fünf Meter über dem Meeresspiegel, die Zwischenstation auf 545 m und die Endstation in Kuranda auf 336 m Höhe, woraus sich ein Höhenunterschied von insgesamt 749 Metern ergibt. Die beiden Abschnitte sind 2,7 Kilometer beziehungsweise 4,8 Kilometer lang. In den beiden Terminals in Smithfield und Kuranda befinden sich die Elektromotoren, die das jeweils bis zur Zwischenstation Red Peak umlaufende 40,5 Millimeter starke Trag- und Zugseil antreiben. Die Seile laufen über insgesamt 32 Seilbahnstützen, die bis zu 40,5 Meter hoch sind. Über die Spitzen der Türme läuft ein Kommunikationskabel, über das Gespräche und Betriebsdaten zwischen den Stationen übertragen werden. Ursprünglich hatte die Bahn nur 47 Gondeln. Aufgrund des großen Andrangs baute man sie 1997 auf 114 Gondeln aus. Sie hat eine Höchstgeschwindigkeit von 5 m/s (18 km/h), fährt aber meist deutlich langsamer, um den Passagieren einen ausgiebigeren Blick auf den Regenwald zu ermöglichen. 2005 wurde das Seil des steilen Abschnitts von Caravonica auf den Red Peak ersetzt, 2007 auch das andere Seil. Die olympische Flamme benutzte auf dem Weg zu den Olympischen Sommerspielen 2000 in Sydney den Skyrail.
