Elle se trouve à 65 km au nord-ouest de la ville de Punta Arenas. Cette étendue d'eau naturelle occupe une vallée bloquée une importante moraine terminale laissée par le recul d'un glacier pendant la dernière ère glaciaire. Bien qu'il soit situé à l'est de la cordillère des Andes, elle est reliée à l'océan Pacifique à travers le détroit de Magellan via un passage étroit, qui coupe à travers les Andes. El clima es templado frío lluvioso sin estación seca, pero con microclimas. Las temperaturas promedian anualmente los 8 °C, pero en verano varían entre los 10 °C y 18 °C.
