Su denominación hacía alusión al coche del cual derivaba y al principal desarrollo hecho en Argentina, el cual fue su motor de 1800 cm³. Es un automóvil de turismo del segmento D, pensado por General Motors como respuesta a la crisis mundial petrolera que afectó al mercado en los años 1970, además de ser una fuerte respuesta a la apuesta de Ford en Argentina que había lanzado el Ford Taunus a la venta en ese mismo año. También el objetivo de General Motors con este auto fue el de acaparar el mercado de los medianos, dando caza a modelos ya consagrados de su segmento, como el Dodge 1500, el Fiat 125 y el Peugeot 504. A pesar de tener su origen en la tercera generación del Opel Kadett y guardar similitud con el brasileño Chevrolet Chevette, el K-180 únicamente fue producido con carrocería sedán de cuatro puertas. Al mismo tiempo, presentó como principales reformas su motor Chevrolet 110 de 1800 cm³ (desarrollado íntegramente en Argentina, sobre la base del motor Chevrolet 194 de 6 cilindros en línea) y una reinterpretación de la Plataforma "T" de General Motors, la cual debió ser reforzada ya que el motor 110 era muy superior al motor original del Kadett de 1200 cm³. The K 180 differed from the Kadett in that it had an Argentinian-designed 1.8-litre engine, derived from the locally built Chevrolet 194 engine. Fitted with a downdraught Bendix carburetor and with a 8.2:1 compression ratio, it develops a claimed 83 hp (62 kW) SAE at 5200 rpm. In 1976 the sporting Rally version was added to the lineup, featuring a rev counter, black bumpers, black striping, and other such accoutrements. The next year the more luxurious K 180 LX version was added. The K 180 was awarded Car of the Year in 1977 by APICA, an association of automotive journalists. It was replaced by the GMC Chevette in 1980, two years after K 180 production had ended.
