The height of the cliffs increases from west to east, ranging from 400 to 600 metres (1,300 to 2,000 ft) above the Ross Ice Shelf. They were named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names in 1999 after of the Department of Geoscience, New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (NMIMT), Socorro, a member of the 1982 NMIMT field party that carried out the first geological mapping of Minna Bluff.
