Er war Professor an der University of Maryland und ist Professor an der University of Notre Dame (Rev. Howard J. Kenna Professor). Er befasst sich mit metrischer Geometrie, Differentialgeometrie, Topologie und geometrischer Analysis. 1977 bewies er einen Sphärensatz mit K.
