The Anglican Church of Canada is the third … The Anglican Church of Canada is the third largest church in Canada, after the Roman Catholic Church and the United Church of Canada. After many years of debate, the first same-sex union was sanctioned in 2003, by the Diocese of New Westminster, in Vancouver. However it was not considered a marriage ceremony, but rather a blessing of "permanent and faithful commitments" between persons of the same sex. Since then ten other dioceses have followed suit, as well as the Anglican Parishes of the Central Interior. In 2007, the 106th Diocesan Synod of New Westminster passed a motion that "no person will be denied Baptism, Communion, or Confirmation because of their own or their parents’ sexual orientation." This decision was condemned by some Canadian Anglicans, and several conservative national Anglican churches, notably those of Uganda and Nigeria, declared themselves out of communion with the ACC as a result. In 2012, the Diocese of Montreal became the first to ordain two openly gay and partnered men to the diaconate and priesthood.
