التكرار التاريخي (بالإنجليزية: Historic re … التكرار التاريخي (بالإنجليزية: Historic recurrence) أو التاريخ يكرر نفسه هي عبارة عن تكرار الأحداث المتشابهة في التاريخ. طُبق مفهوم التكرار التاريخي بطرق شتى على التاريخ الإجمالي للعالم (قيام وسقوط الإمبراطوريات مثلًا)، وعلى النماذج التكرارية في تاريخ كيان سياسي ما، وعلى أي حدثين محددين يحملان تشابهًا بارزًا. افتراضيًا، وبحده الأقصى، يعتنق مفهوم التكرار التاريخي عقيدة العَود الأبدي، التي كُتب عنها بصيغ مختلفة منذ القدم ووصفها في القرن التاسع عشر كل من هاينرش هاينه وفريدريك نتيشه. لكن، بينما يُشار إلى المفهوم غالبًا بعبارة «التاريخ يعيد نفسه»، لا يمكن اعتبار ذلك صحيحًا تمامًا في دورات دون مدة الدورة كونية. لا يشتمل هذا التفسير للتكرار على ماورائيات، على نقيض تفسير نيتشه ربما. تقع التكرارات نتيجة ظروف يمكن التحقق منها وسلاسل سببية. أحد الأمثلة على الآلية هي ظاهرة الاكتشاف المتعدد المستقل (الاختراع المتزامن) في العلم والتكنولوجيا، التي صوّرها روبيرت كيه ميرتون وهارييت زوكرمان الموجودة في كل مكان. يتقفى جي دبليو ترومف، في كتابه فكرة التكرار التاريخي في الفكر الغربي، أثر أنماط الفكر والسلوك السياسيين المتكررة تاريخيًا في الغرب منذ التاريخ القديم. إذا كان التاريخ يحمل لنا دروسًا، فهي موجودة بامتياز في أنماط متكررة كهذه. يمكن أن تُحدث التكرارات التاريخية من نوع «التشابه البارز» شعورًا بالـ «التقاء» أو الـ «رَجع الصدى» أو وهم سبق الرؤيا.اء» أو الـ «رَجع الصدى» أو وهم سبق الرؤيا.

The concept of historic recurrence has variously been applied to overall human history (e.g., to the rises and falls of empires), to repetitive patterns in the history of a given polity, and to any two specific events which bear a striking similarity. Hypothetically, in the extreme, the concept of historic recurrence assumes the form of the Doctrine of Eternal Recurrence, which has been written about in various forms since antiquity and was described in the 19th century by Heinrich Heine and Friedrich Nietzsche. While it is often remarked that "history repeats itself", in cycles of less than cosmological duration this cannot be strictly true. In this interpretation of recurrence, as opposed perhaps to the Nietzschean interpretation, there is no metaphysics. Recurrences take place due to ascertainable circumstances and chains of causality. An example is the ubiquitous phenomenon of multiple independent discovery in science and technology, described by Robert K. Merton and Harriet Zuckerman. Indeed, recurrences, in the form of reproducible findings obtained through experiment or observation, are essential to the natural and social sciences; and, in the form of chance observations rigorously studied via the comparative method, are essential to the humanities. G.W. Trompf, in his book The Idea of Historical Recurrence in Western Thought, traces historically recurring patterns of political thought and behavior in the west since antiquity. If history has lessons to impart, they are to be found par excellence in such recurring patterns. Historic recurrences of the "striking-similarity" type can sometimes induce a sense of "convergence", "resonance" or déjà vu. of "convergence", "resonance" or déjà vu.
