Baumslag was also the organizer of the New York Group Theory Seminar. Baumslag graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa with a B.Sc. Honours (Masters) and D.Sc. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Manchester in 1958; his thesis, written under the direction of Bernhard Neumann, was titled Some aspects of groups with unique roots. His contributions include the Baumslag–Solitar groups and parafree groups. Baumslag was a visiting scholar at the Institute for Advanced Study in 1968–69. Danach war er 1958/69 Lecturer an der Universität Manchester, 1959/60 Instructor an der Princeton University und ab 1962 Assistant Professor am Courant-Institut der New York University, wo er auch Associate Professor wurde. 1964 wurde er Professor an der City University of New York, 1969 bis 1973 war er Professor an der Rice University und danach am City College der City University of New York. Dort war er ab 1973 Distinguished Professor. Er befasste sich mit Kombinatorischer Gruppentheorie und unendlichen Gruppen. Mit Donald Solitar führte er 1962 ein, erzeugt durch die Relation .
