Fue el primer Alto Comisionado de las Naciones Unidas para los refugiados (1951 – 1956). Van Heuven Goedhart (Van Heuven was zijn toegevoegde moedersnaam) was een domineeszoon, die na zijn rechtenstudie aan de Rijksuniversiteit Leiden al als 29-jarige hoofdredacteur werd van De Telegraaf. Hij werd na drie jaar ontslagen, na een conflict met Telegraaf-eigenaar Hak Holdert. Van het Utrechts Nieuwsblad maakte hij vervolgens in de jaren dertig door zijn opstelling jegens nazi-Duitsland een gezaghebbende krant.
