Sami Erol Gelenbe (born 22 August 1945, in … Sami Erol Gelenbe (born 22 August 1945, in Istanbul, Turkey) is a Turkish and French computer scientist, electronic engineer and applied mathematician who pioneered the field of Computer System and Network Performance in Europe, and is active in many research projects of the European Union. He is Professor in the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Informatics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (2017-), Associate Researcher in the I3S Laboratory (CNRS, University of Côte d'Azur, Nice) and Abraham de Moivre Laboratory (CNRS, Imperial College). He has held Chaired professorships at University of Liège (1974-1979), University Paris-Saclay (1979-1986), University Paris Descartes (1986-2005), Nello L. Teer Professor and ECE Chair at Duke University (1993-1998), University Chair Professor and Director of the School of EECS, University of Central Florida (1998-2003), and Dennis Gabor Professor and Head of Intelligent Systems and Network, Imperial College (2003-2019). He invented the random neural network and the eponymous G-networks. He has served as a consultant to Thomson-CSF, IBM, BT, France Telecom, Huawei, and General Dynamics. His awards include the Parlar Foundation Science Award (1994), the Grand Prix France Telecom (1996) of the French Academy of Sciences, the ACM SIGMETRICS Life-Time Achievement Award, the Oliver Lodge Medal (UK Institution of Engineering and Technology, 2010), the "In Memoriam Dennis Gabor Award" (Novofer Foundation, Budapest), and the Mustafa Prize (2017)., Budapest), and the Mustafa Prize (2017).

, Sami Erol Gelenbe (né le 22 août 1945 à Is … Sami Erol Gelenbe (né le 22 août 1945 à Istanbul) est un ingénieur, mathématicien et informaticien franco-turc. Sa carrière internationale le conduit depuis la Turquie vers les États-Unis, la France, la Belgique et le Royaume-Uni, et dans chaque pays il est professeur d'université et chef d'équipes parfois importantes. Il est connu pour ses travaux concernant l'évaluation des performances de systèmes et réseaux informatiques. Il a inventé le concept mathématique du réseau aléatoire, dont des modèles mathématiques tels que les "G-networks", en calculant une solution mathématique explicite de grands réseaux avec éléments de contrôle tels que le re-routage pour des raisons de re-équilibrage de charge, ou l'élimination d’excès de trafic pour réduire la surcharge éventuelle du réseau. Il a aussi inventé le "réseau neuronal aléatoire" et ses algorithmes d'apprentissage par gradient de complexité O(n^3) pour un réseau avec n neurones, et ses algorithmes d'apprentissage profond. Ses travaux lui valent le grand prix France Télécom de l'Académie des sciences de France (1996), le prix de l'ACM sur les mesures et modèles de performances "ACM SIGMETRICS Life-Time Achievement Award (2008)", la médaille Oliver Lodge décernée par l'Institution of Engineering and Technology (2010) de Grande-Bretagne, le prix Dennis Gabor de l'Académie des sciences de Hongrie (2013), le prix Mustafa décerné par la Fondation Pardis (2017), et en 2019 il est l'un des 18 scientifiques qui se voient décerner le titre de IFIP Fellow pour célébrer le 60è anniversaire de l'International Federation of Information Processing.
