The disengagement theory is one of three major psychosocial theories which describe how people develop in old age. Inscrit dans des logiques proches de celles de l'interactionnisme symbolique et du constructivisme social, il permet depuis lors de penser en des termes nouveaux la perte de compétence et la dévalorisation de soi que l'on constate souvent chez les personnes âgées vieillissantes, des phénomènes qui constituent en un sens une perte de prise sur le monde environnant, d'où le terme de déprise. Ainsi, le concept a été mis en œuvre dans plusieurs branches de la sociologie pour y mesurer les effets spécifiques de l'avancée en âge et de ses multiples corollaires, notamment dans la sociologie des médias, la sociologie de la famille, la sociologie du travail et la sociologie de la santé. Il a par ailleurs été décliné selon plusieurs modalités, notamment en « déprise inquiète », « déprise tactique » et « déprise stratégique », ce qui correspond à trois formes de retrait du monde relevés par les sociologues.
