Zu den Besonderheiten des Rennens gehört, dass insgesamt 1219 Höhenmeter überwunden werden müssen, wobei die ersten Streckenabschnitte über das für Mill Valley typische Labyrinth von Treppen und Pfaden am Fuße des Mount Tamalpais führen. Eine weitere Besonderheit ist, dass das Ziel über verschiedene, von den Läufern unter strategischen Gesichtspunkten ausgewählte Routen erreicht werden kann.
