Coutances Cathedral (French: Cathédrale No … Coutances Cathedral (French: Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Coutances) is a Gothic Catholic cathedral constructed from 1210 to 1274 in the town of Coutances, Normandy, France. It incorporated the remains of an earlier Norman cathedral. It is the seat of the Bishop of Coutances and Avranches and was previously that of the Bishop of Coutances. Standing 80 metres (295 ft) tall, it dominates the town and can be seen from as far away as the island of Jersey. De kathedraal is gewijd aan Maria en is de zetel van het rooms-katholieke . Het is een van de mooiste kerken van de Normandische gotiek. De huidige kerk gaat terug tot een romaanse kerk uit de 11e eeuw. Deze werd niet afgebroken maar geïntegreerd in een grotere en hogere gotische kerk uit de 13e eeuw. De 90 meter hoge toren van de kerk was zichtbaar vanaf zee en diende als herkenningspunt voor schepen. De achthoekige vieringtoren vormt binnenin een lantaarn. De voorgevel wordt geflankeerd door twee torens. De kerk kwam ongeschonden uit bombardementen in 1944 tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog die een groot deel van de stad vernielden.
