Ericksen an der Johns Hopkins University in Mechanik promoviert (On the existence and the asymptotic stability of solutions to the equations of linear thermoelasticity). 1968 wurde er Assistant Professor an der Cornell University und 1971 Associate Professor und 1975 Professor für Angewandte Mathematik an der Brown University. 1988 bis 1993 und 2006/07 war er Direktor des Lefschetz Center of Dynamical Systems. Er ist Alumni-Alumnae Professor an der Brown University. In jüngster Zeit befasste er sich mit der spontanen Entstehung von Stosswellen in nichtlinearen hyperbolischen Systemen von Erhaltungssätzen und dem Wechselspiel von Thermodynamik und Analysis in diesen Systemen, speziell der stabilisierenden Rolle der Entropie. 2012 wurde er Fellow der American Mathematical Society. He received a Diploma in CivilEngineering from the National Technical University of Athens (1964) and a Ph.D. in Mechanics from Johns Hopkins University under the direction of Jerald Ericksen (1967). He has been an Assistant Professor at Cornell University (1968-1971) and an Associate Professor (1971-1975) and Professor (1975-) in the Division of Applied Mathematics at Brown University. Since 1984, he has been the Alumni-Alumnae University Professor at Brown. In recent years, his research has focused on nonlinear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws whose solutions spontaneously develop singularities propagating as shock waves. In particular, he is studying the interplay between thermodynamics and analysis in the theory of these systems and he is analyzing the fundamental role of entropy as a stabilizing agent.
