Los cetáceos (o Cetacea, del griego antigu … Los cetáceos (o Cetacea, del griego antiguo κῆτος /, que significa "monstruo marino") son un grupo de mamíferos acuáticos. En 2020 se conocen aproximadamente 86 especies de cetáceos en todo el mundo, de las cuales se han observado al menos 35 especies en la Gran Región del Caribe, con una dispersión muy amplia y densidades variables según el territorio. Las aguas del Caribe son ante todo un lugar privilegiado para la reproducción de varias especies de misticetos que viven el resto del año más al norte (América y norte de Europa). El tucuxi y el boto viven en agua dulce en el Amazonas y en las cuencas fluviales circundantes, en los límites de la región del Caribe. Las políticas públicas tienen en consideración a los cetáceos en muy distintos grados: por un lado existen varios santuarios dedicados a ellos y por otro hay países donde aún se practica la caza de cetáceos de forma bastante generalizada. Además de los cetáceos, el Caribe cuenta también con otras especies de mamíferos marinos, incluidas dos especies de pinnípedos en zonas fuera de su área de distribución (foca capuchina) o escapadas de acuarios (lobo marino de California). La única especie de foca autóctona es la foca monje del Caribe, que se considera extinta desde mediados del siglo XX.
