The CMRE is an executive body of NATO's Science and Technology Organization (STO) along with the NATO Collaboration Support Office and Office of the Chief Scientist (OCS). Located in La Spezia (Italy), the CMRE is built on more than 60 years of experience in its former establishments as the NATO Undersea Research Centre (NURC) and SACLANTCEN and has produced a cadre of leaders in ocean science, modelling and simulation, acoustics and other disciplines, as well as producing critical results and understanding that have been built into the operational concepts of NATO and the Nations. L'Alliance è una nave di 93 metri entrata in servizio nel 1988, data in gestione alla Deutsche Marine per poi essere ceduta in gestione nel 2016 alla Marina Militare; il suo doppio scafo e il suo sistema di propulsione ne fanno una delle navi da ricerca più silenziose al mondo. La più piccola CRV Leonardo, entrata in servizio nel 2002, è stato progettata per condurre esperimenti in acque più basse. Oltre a sostenere la missione scientifica del CMRE, le due navi vengono noleggiate a organizzazioni commerciali o governative all'interno delle nazioni della NATO. Le due unità navali a seguito di un accordo stipulato fra il Ministero della difesa e il CMRE, la Marina Militare mette a disposizione il proprio personale militare per equipaggiare le navi, mentre la NATO ne condivide l’impiego con la Marina Militare.
