Créée en 2005 par l'ancien maire de Londres Ken Livingstone, l'organisation rassemble 94 des plus grandes villes du monde ainsi que 6 villes observatrices, représentant 49 pays différents. Elle représente 600 millions d'habitants et 25 % du PIB mondial, mais aussi 70 % de l'émission de gaz à effet de serre. Le 8 août 2016, Anne Hidalgo, maire de Paris, prend la présidence du C40. Le 8 octobre 2019, c'est le maire de Los Angeles, Eric Garcetti, qui devient président du C40.ic Garcetti, qui devient président du C40.
, 도시 기후 리더십 그룹(Cities Climate leadership gro … 도시 기후 리더십 그룹(Cities Climate leadership group, C40)은 세계온실가스 80% 이상을 배출하고 있는 대도시들이 기후변화에 적극 대응하기 위해 2005년 발족시킨 세계 대도시 협의체로, 런던·뉴욕·파리 등 40개 정회원 도시와 16개 협력회원 도시로 구성되었다. 1차 회의는 2005년 런던에서, 2차 회의는 2007년 뉴욕에서 개최되었으며, 제3차 C40 정상회의는 2009년 5월 18일부터 5월 21일까지 서울 신라 호텔에서 개최되었다. 빌 클린턴 전 미국 대통령이 연사로 참석하였다. 신라 호텔에서 개최되었다. 빌 클린턴 전 미국 대통령이 연사로 참석하였다.
