Intensive, nicht am Konzept der Nachhaltigkeit orientierte Aquakultur kann allerdings durch Verknappung oder Verschmutzung von Süßwasservorkommen, Belastung der Böden und durch ihren hohen Flächenverbrauch vor allem in Küstenbereich lang- und mittelfristig problematische Folgen für die Bevölkerung haben. Besorgniserregend ist zum Beispiel die Zerstörung von Mangrovenwäldern durch die Anlage von Garnelenzuchten in weiten Teilen Asiens und Südamerikas.
