Το ζευγάρι εξακολουθούσε όμως να ζει κανονικά μαζί και έκαναν τρία παιδιά, οπότε ο πάπας τους αφόρισε. Ο Μπουσάρ αιχμαλωτίστηκε (1219) και απελευθερώθηκε δυο χρόνια αργότερα (1221), με τον όρο να χωρίσει την Μαργαρίτα και να πάει στην Ρώμη να ζητήσει συγχώρηση από τον πάπα. Την περίοδο που ο Μπουσάρ βρισκόταν στην Ρώμη η Ιωάννα πάντρεψε βίαια την μικρότερη αδελφή της με τον Γουλιέλμο Β΄ κύριο του Νταμπιέρ, έναν ευγενή από την Καμπανία.
