Sus manuscritos ilustrados, sus cuadernos de notas y sus acuarelas y dibujos representan una valiosa fuente documental para conocer numerosos aspectos de la sociedad y del medio natural de Tenerife, y del resto de Islas Canarias, durante la primera mitad del siglo XIX.​ Su importancia para la cultura de Canarias radica en sus aportaciones a una gran variedad de disciplinas, siendo especialmente relevantes las relacionadas con el conocimiento de los trajes tradicionales de Canarias y el de las costumbres canarias de su tiempo. No menos trascendental fue su protagonismo en la introducción en las Islas Canarias de la variedad de plátano conocido como plátano Cavendish, alguno de cuyos cultivares se engloban hoy en la denominación de "Plátano de Canarias".
